Budget season is coming to a head in Orange County, as local government boards are nearing final decisions. The Chapel Hill Town Council could approve their budget this week, while Orange County Commissioners will likely sign off on a “resolution of intent” to adopt their budget plan later in the month. Carrboro’s government has been further behind in the process, but town manager Richard White will present his budget proposal to the Town Council this week, with a final vote still likely by the end of the month.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County Commissioners meet twice this week (both in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough) as they draw closer to a final vote on next year’s budget. Their first meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 6; commissioners will get an update on tax collections and a new report on whether county departments hit their target goals for this fiscal year. Then on Thursday, June 8, commissioners will reconvene at 7 p.m. for a budget work session that includes a discussion of county fees, tax rates, per-pupil school spending, and capital investment for the next ten years. On Thursday, county commissioners will likely approve a resolution stating their intent to adopt the budget – though the final vote won’t happen until June 20. Click here for links to both agendas.
In Carrboro, town manager Richard White will present his budget proposal for the first time when the Town Council meets on Tuesday, June 6, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. Council members will also consider annexing and rezoning three properties on and near Homestead Road for a possible new residential subdivision. And they’ll consider amending Carrboro’s land use ordinance to establish a “complete streets” policy, a strategy to promote biking and walking for transportation around town. The Chapel Hill Town Council also meets twice this week: a closed-session special meeting at 6:30 on Tuesday, June 6, followed by their regular meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 7. Council members will likely vote on interim town manager Chris Blue’s budget plan for the 2024 fiscal year; they’ll also consider a zoning application for a proposed development at South Creek (formerly Obey Creek), along 15/501 across from Southern Village. And the Durham City Council may approve their budget plan for next year – as well as a capital improvement plan for the next five years – when they meet in City Hall at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 8. Get the full agenda at this link.
