This week, the spotlight is on Chapel Hill, as the Town Council opens a public hearing on a proposal to expand housing choices as part of the town’s Complete Communities initiative. But it’s a busy week all around for local government: the Orange County School Board tackles facility upgrades, Durham County Commissioners honor a national champion, and the Pittsboro town board considers legal action over water contamination.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners has a crowded calendar, with a regular meeting on Monday, January 23, followed by a budget retreat on Saturday the 28th. Monday’s meeting begins at 7:00 p.m., with an agenda that includes an annual report from the metropolitan planning organization and a discussion of how to pursue federal funding for important local projects. The Chapel Hill Town Council also has a busy week, with a trio of meetings over a two-day period. On Tuesday, January 24, council members will hold a legislative breakfast with Orange County lawmakers beginning at 8:30 in the Chapel Hill Public Library; later in the evening, the council will hold a closed-session meeting in Town Hall to discuss a personnel matter. Then the Town Council will convene for its regular meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, with an agenda that includes a hearing on the Complete Communities initiative: the council will open a hearing on a proposed amendment to the town’s Land Use Management Ordinance (LUMO) to allow for more housing options, including duplexes and townhomes. And the Orange County School Board meets Monday, January 23, at 7:00 p.m. in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. Board members will consider funding for facility upgrades at Orange High School and hold a work session on upcoming capital investments and summer school programs. Click here for the full agenda.

Chatham and Durham Counties

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets on Monday, January 23, in the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center. After a special meeting with the town’s state legislative delegation at 6:00 p.m., the board will convene for its regular meeting at 7:00, with an agenda that includes a discussion of whether to pursue litigation over PFAS contamination in the Haw River. Durham County Commissioners also meet on Monday, January 23. After a closed-session meeting at 5:30, commissioners will convene in open session at 7:00, with an agenda that includes a public hearing on two large economic development projects and a resolution honoring the NC Central football team for winning this year’s HBCU title.
