This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.

This week’s local government agenda is dominated by one meeting: the so-called “Assembly of Governments” that periodically brings the Orange County Board of Commissioners together with the Chapel Hill Town Council, the Carrboro Town Council, and the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners. This week’s AOG meeting has a shorter agenda, but still features two very significant long-term issues. Meanwhile in Durham, all eyes are on the school board after a “salary overpayment” dispute (in the district’s words) led to a massive walkout of bus drivers last week. The school board is holding a special closed-session meeting Monday morning to discuss that issue, with a public statement to follow immediately after.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

Orange County Commissioners will meet jointly with the Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough town boards in an Assembly of Governments meeting Tuesday, January 23, at 7 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. This AOG meeting has a shorter agenda: elected officials will receive updates on the One Orange racial equity plan and the behavioral health diversion facility. Click here for the full agenda.

The Hillsborough town board also meets separately on Monday, January 22, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall Annex. Board members will look ahead to an upcoming budget retreat and get updates on the town’s sustainability efforts. Get the full agenda at this link.

And the Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, also with a lighter agenda that features an update on plans for a North-South Bus Rapid Transit line. Click here for the full agenda.

The Orange County School Board also meets this week, at 7 p.m. Monday, January 22 in the Whitted Building. Their agenda includes a discussion of plans to purchase new laptops and tablets for students, to replace their aging ones. Get the full agenda here.

Chatham and Durham Counties

The Durham school board is holding a special closed-session meeting at 8 a.m. Monday, January 22, to discuss the “salary overpayment issue” that led to a widespread bus-driver walkout last week. (District officials say some staff were mistakenly overpaid for the last few months of 2023 – but correcting the mistake sparked protest, because it effectively showed up in employees’ paychecks as a sudden and significant salary cut.) Monday’s meeting will not be in open session, but board members are planning to release a public statement afterward. The board is also scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, January 25; that agenda will be available at this link.

And Durham County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Monday, January 22, with an agenda that includes a public hearing and possible vote on a plan to issue bonds for school renovations and other capital projects. Read the full agenda here.
