Now that the holidays are over, elected boards are returning to session for their first meetings of 2024. For the Durham City Council, that means a trio of meetings over the course of three days, including one to fill the council seat left vacant when Leonardo Williams got elected mayor. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Chatham County school boards are discussing ways to implement the controversial new “Parents’ Bill of Rights” law. And the Chapel Hill Town Council is continuing two long-term discussions: one on the town’s “Complete Community” initiative and another on the land use management ordinance (or LUMO for short).

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Carrboro Town Council has a work session at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16, to discuss a report of recommendations from the town’s Community Safety Task Force. Click here for a link to the agenda.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets on Wednesday, January 17, at 6 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Public Library. Their agenda includes a discussion of the Complete Community initiative and an update on efforts to rewrite the town’s land use management ordinance (LUMO). Get the full agenda at this link.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 18. This week’s agenda includes a revised plan to implement the new “parents’ bill of rights law,” with recommendations from the policy committee. Click here for the full agenda.

Chatham and Durham Counties

Chatham County Commissioners meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 16. Their agenda includes a proposed housing contract with Chatham Habitat for Humanity and a public hearing on a proposed regional water treatment facility in New Hope Township. Click here for a link to the agenda.

The Chatham County School Board meets twice this week. Their regular meeting is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, with an agenda that includes a proposed site for new schools in Chatham Park. Then the board has a mid-year retreat at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 17 – continuing the Chatham Park discussion as part of an agenda that also includes the Parents’ Bill of Rights and affordable-housing support for district staff. And the Durham City Council meets three times this week. First, the council meets at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 16, to choose an appointee to fill a vacant seat in Ward 3. That individual will be sworn in at the council’s next meeting, at 7 p.m. that same evening. Then the council meets one more time, at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 18, for a work session that includes discussions of budgeting, grant-funding possibilities, and affordable housing.
