More and more local government boards are returning to session from their winter breaks, but many of them still have lighter agendas this week. Some key items are up for discussion, though: in Hillsborough, the town board will consider a proposed development off Old 86 near the interstates, while Orange County Commissioners look ahead at the coming year with an all-day retreat. And perhaps the most provocative agenda item this week won’t result in any actual decisions: the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board is slated to discuss the possibility of closing schools in the future, but that conversation is still in the very early phases and no final decisions will be made for some time.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, January 12. Click here for this week’s agenda, which includes a rezoning request for Phase 2 of the Oakdale Village commercial development off Old 86 just south of I-85.

Orange County Commissioners have an all-day board retreat Friday, January 16, in the Whitted Building starting at 9 a.m. Click here for the agenda, which includes a discussion at the county’s strategic plan and a look ahead at this year’s budget talks.

And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 15. Tops on their agenda is a very early discussion of possible future school closures, given declining enrollment and budget constraints: the board won’t be making any final decisions anytime soon, but Superintendent Rodney Trice will provide an overview of the state procedures for taking that step. Also, the board will consider budget amendments for the current year and get an update on the district’s new policy banning cell-phone use in the schools. Click here for the full agenda.

Chatham and Durham Counties

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets at 6 p.m. Monday, January 12. Click here for the agenda, which includes an update on plans for Robeson Walk Park and a request to open a portion of Chatham Parkway.

The Chatham County school board meets twice this week – first their regular meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, January 12, followed by an all-day board retreat Tuesday, January 13, starting at 8:30 a.m. Monday’s meeting include the results of an audit from the 2024-25 school year; Tuesday’s retreat will include discussions of how to manage expected growth, how immigration policies are affecting students, how to better manage students’ mental health, and what to consider for next year’s budget. Get links to both agendas here.

Durham County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Monday, January 12. Click here for the agenda, which is a light one this week with no scheduled action items beyond their consent agenda.

Finally, the Durham school board is slated to hold a work session at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, January 15. Their agenda has not yet been made public, but will be available at this link.
