It’s another busy week for local government, and it gets started right away: Monday night, Orange County Commissioners will sit down with the Hillsborough town board for a wide-ranging discussion of issues ranging from the town’s water & sewer capacity (which impacts future planning) to the latest on plans to build a new train station and crisis diversion center. Later in the week, county commissioners will discuss school construction; the Carrboro Town Council will get an overview of bike/ped transportation projects; and the Chapel Hill Town Council will continue discussing plans for a Co-Gen greenway connecting UNC’s main campus with Carolina North – and all of that is just in Orange County, let alone Chatham and Durham.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

Orange County Commissioners meet jointly with the Hillsborough town board Monday, February 17, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. Board members will discuss land use planning in the context of Hillsborough’s water & sewer capacity; plans for Fairview Park including environmental remediation from the former landfill; and future plans for a Hillsborough train station and a Crisis Diversion Facility for behavioral health care near the UNC hospital in Waterstone. County commissioners will also meet on Thursday, February 20, at 7 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. Commissioners will discuss school construction options, this year’s property revaluation, a draft of next year’s transit work plan, and the county’s legislative priorities for this year’s General Assembly session. Get the full agenda here.

The Carrboro Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, February 18. At this week’s meeting, town staff will provide an update on transportation projects around town, most of which are designed to improve accessibility and safety for bicyclists and pedestrians. Get the full agenda at this link.

The Chapel Hill Town Council was set to meet Wednesday, February 19, but the meeting has been canceled due to the winter weather. Council members will address the agenda items on March 5 instead.

And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, February 20. Click here for this week’s agenda, which includes a discussion of the district’s legislative priorities for the General Assembly and a look ahead at an upcoming board retreat.

Chatham and Durham Counties

Chatham County Commissioners were forced to call off their meeting set for Monday, February 17 at 6 p.m. due to a lack of quorum after “unforeseen circumstances.” The planned business, which includes a public hearing on plans for a new EMS station in Baldwin Township, will be delayed to a later date.

The Durham City Council meets twice this week, first at 7 p.m. Monday, February 17, then at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 20. Click here for a link to the agendas, which include discussions (all on Thursday) of a quarterly financial report, a quarterly crime report, and a resident survey on the city’s police department.

Durham County Commissioners meet jointly with the Durham school board at 9 a.m. Tuesday, February 18. Their agenda includes a budget discussion as well as an update on transportation, with the district still facing an ongoing bus driver shortage. Click here for the agenda.

The Durham school board will meet again on Thursday, February 20, beginning at 5:30 with a budget hearing and continuing with their regular meeting at 6:30. The agenda for that meeting will be posted at this link.
