This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.
This week’s local government agendas are mostly highlighted by the swearing in of new board members: newly elected officials will take their oaths of office in Orange, Durham, and Chatham Counties, and various boards will also elect new chairs and vice-chairs for the coming year. Beyond that, the most closely-watched agenda item will be in Chapel Hill, where the Town Council will take a second look at a proposal to eliminate eight advisory boards.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Chapel Hill Town Council meets on Monday, December 2 (rescheduled from Wednesday the 4th), at 6 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Public Library. Tops on the agenda: council members will revisit a proposal to disband eight advisory boards and commissions. A vote on that proposal last month failed to reach a needed two-thirds majority – four council members asked for additional discussion, to see if the boards could simply be restructured – but the second vote needs only a simple majority to pass.
In addition to that, this week’s agenda also includes an update on the town’s five-year budget plan and further discussion of staff recommendations for an updated Land Use Management Ordinance (LUMO). Council members will also receive the results of an annual audit.
Orange County Commissioners also meet Monday, December 2, in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. First, the county will hold a reception at 6 p.m. for newly elected and re-elected board members, including new member Marilyn Carter. Then the board will begin its meeting at 7:00: Carter and other electees will take their oaths of office; the board will elect a new chair and vice-chair for next year; and board members will consider joining an interlocal agreement for distribution of transit tax funds.

The Carrboro Town Council has a brief meeting scheduled for Tuesday, December 3, beginning at 6 p.m. Newly elected council member Cristobal Palmer will take his oath of office, then the board will go into closed session to discuss a legal matter.
And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, December 5. Board members will elect a new chair and vice-chair for the coming year; they’ll receive an audit from the previous fiscal year; and they’ll vote on new and revised courses for the 2025-26 school year.

Chatham and Durham Counties
The Chatham County School Board will meet briefly at 4 p.m. Monday, December 2. There’s only one item on the agenda, though: newly elected board member Ana Carlson will take her oath of office. Get the full agenda here.
The Pittsboro town board will hold a budget scoping session at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 4. Town commissioners will discuss their priorities for next year’s budget and the schedule for adopting it. Click here for the full agenda.
Durham County Commissioners have a short work session at 9 a.m. Monday, December 2, to swear in newly elected board members and elect a new chair and vice-chair. Get the full agenda here.
Finally, the Durham City Council has a pair of meetings this week, at 7 p.m. Monday, December 2, and then again at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 5. Monday’s meeting features public hearings on development proposals; Thursday’s agenda is highlighted by a proposal to rename Vivian Street after former mayor Bill Bell.
