As we approach Christmas and New Year’s Day, many local government boards have already wrapped up their business for the year – but there are still some notable exceptions. In Chapel Hill, Jessica Anderson will officially be sworn in as mayor, and in Hillsborough, the Orange County School Board will gather (virtually) to appoint a new superintendent.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Orange County School Board meets virtually at noon on Monday, December 18, to appoint a new superintendent. This will be the district’s first permanent superintendent since Dr. Monique Felder left the role in early August; Jim Merrill has been serving as interim superintendent since then. The Chapel Hill Town Council also meets Monday, December 18, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. Jessica Anderson will be sworn in as mayor, and Melissa McCullough, Theodore Nollert and Elizabeth Sharp will be sworn in as new council members alongside returning council member Amy Ryan. Chatham and Durham Counties
Chatham County Commissioners meet Monday, December 18, beginning with a work session at 2 p.m. and continuing with a regular meeting at 6 p.m. During the work session, commissioners will get the results of an audit from the 2023 fiscal year and hear annual reports from the county’s advisory committees on affordable housing and climate change. Then at 6:00, commissioners will vote on a proposal for capital improvements over the next seven years. Click here for a link to the full agenda.
The Durham City Council meets twice this week, at 7 p.m. Monday, December 18, and then again at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 19. Monday’s meeting includes a continued discussion of how to fill a vacant council seat and a public hearing on housing and community development needs for the coming fiscal year; Tuesday’s work session includes a presentation of recommendations from the city’s Community Safety and Wellness Task Force.
