Budget season resumes in local government this week, with public hearings for both of Orange County’s two school boards and a work session for Orange County Commissioners on a 10-year capital investment plan. In addition, the Carrboro Town Council will consider moving forward on plans to create an Intergovernmental Climate Council, enabling cooperation between the towns and the county on efforts to limit climate change – and mitigate its effects.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, April 8, with a light agenda that includes a presentation on the town’s stormwater program. Click here for the full agenda.
Orange County Commissioners will meet in the Southern Human Services Center at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, for a work session on county manager Bonnie Hammersley’s recommended 10-year Capital Investment Plan (CIP). Get the full agenda here.
The Carrboro Town Council also meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9. On their agenda: council members will vote to create an Intergovernmental Climate Council that will facilitate collaboration on climate mitigation efforts with Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, and Orange County government. The Chapel Hill Town Council has no regular meeting this week, but council members will convene at 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 12, for a legislative breakfast with Chapel Hill’s representatives in the General Assembly. In addition, the council’s Naming Committee will meet virtually at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 11, to discuss the “Change the Names” petition urging the town to rename Cameron Avenue after civil rights attorney Pauli Murray. (The street’s current namesake, Paul Cameron, was a major donor to UNC but also one of North Carolina’s largest slaveholders at the start of the Civil War.) Click here for links to both agendas.
The Orange County School Board meets in the Whitted Building at 7 p.m. Monday, April 8. Their agenda includes a public hearing on next year’s budget. The board will also discuss the possibility of closing Hillsborough Elementary School, should voters approve a bond referendum this fall: if it passes, the bond would provide the district with funds to build a new elementary school. And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets in the Lincoln Center at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 11 – also with an agenda that includes a public hearing on next year’s budget. Click here for the agenda.
Chatham and Durham Counties
The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets at 6 p.m. Monday, April 8. Click here for the agenda, which includes a public hearing on a rezoning request that town staff is warning may be incompatible with the town’s Future Land Use Plan.
Durham County Commissioners also meet Monday, April 8, beginning at 7 p.m. Click here for their full agenda – a light one this week, comprised mostly of ceremonial items.
And the Durham County School Board meets at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 11. The board’s agenda will be available at this link.
