Budget season is in full swing this week for local government boards. Perhaps the most pivotal meeting on that front will take place Thursday, April 9, when the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board meets to hear from residents on next year’s budget – and to consider cutting 23 staff positions to deal with their ongoing financial crunch. Chatham County Commissioners and the Pittsboro town board have their own budget meetings this week as well – and in Hillsborough, Orange County Commissioners will get their first look at county manager Travis Myren’s 10-year capital investment plan. Meanwhile in Chapel Hill, the Town Council isn’t slated to talk budgets this week, but they are planning a conversation on another topic of high public interest: the future of the 15/501 corridor south of Southern Village, which is expected to see significant development in the coming years.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

Orange County Commissioners meet Tuesday, April 7, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. County Manager Travis Myren will present his recommended 10-year capital investment plan, and the board will also get a forecast on future school enrollment. Get the full agenda here.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets in the Chapel Hill Public Library at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 8. Council members will receive updates on economic development, the town’s Land Use Management Ordinance, and future development along 15/501 south of Southern Village. And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 9. It’s a big meeting this week, as the board will consider a plan to cut 23 staff positions in an effort to save $2.8 million; they’ll also get a presentation from Carolina Demography on student enrollment projections for the next 10 years. In addition, the board will hear from the public on next year’s budget plan – and they’ll discuss the latest version of the district’s 10-year capital investment plan.
