This is a budget-focused week for local government, with Orange County Commissioners holding a budget work session and the Chapel Hill Town Council holding a public budget hearing. There are numerous other key agenda items this week too – including a proposal for affordable senior housing in northern Chapel Hill and a plan for affordable, transit-oriented development in southeast Durham.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

Orange County Commissioners are holding a budget work session Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building, with a focus on county manager Travis Myren’s recommended 10-year capital investment plan. Click here for a link to the full agenda.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 23. The busy agenda includes a public hearing on next year’s budget and a concept plan for Kappa Phi Fraternity House on E. Rosemary Street. Council members will also consider two development proposals: one for “Maddry Meadows,” 53 affordable senior housing units on Homestead Road, built by affordable-housing developer DHIC; and a smaller proposal to convert a vacant retail space into six multifamily units at 1701 North on MLK Boulevard near Weaver Dairy.

Chatham and Durham Counties

Chatham County Commissioners meet Monday, April 21, at the historic courthouse in Pittsboro – starting with a 1 p.m. work session, followed by a regular session at 6 p.m. Click here for a link to the agenda, which includes farmland preservation grants, climate mitigation efforts, and the use of opioid settlement funds for the next three years.

And the Durham City Council meets twice this week: a regular meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, April 21, followed by a work session at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 24. Monday’s agenda includes a proposed rezoning to try to promote transit-oriented development and affordable housing in the area between Davis Drive and Page Road just south of I-40. Thursday’s agenda includes a discussion of water and sewer rates, as well as a presentation of a concept plan for Durham Central Park. Click here for links to both agendas.
