Budget season continues for local government, as the Hillsborough town board and Durham County Commissioners each prepare to receive their respective budget proposals for the next fiscal year. One step ahead are Orange County Manager Bonnie Hammersley, Chapel Hill Town Manager Maurice Jones, and Pittsboro Town Manager Chris Kennedy: they’ve already released their own budget plans, but now residents and elected board members will have their chance to weigh in. The only local municipality that’s not tackling budget issues this week is Carrboro – but that’s because the Town Council has an even more significant proposal to consider.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners will meet Monday, May 9, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall Annex. The board will receive Town Manager Eric Peterson’s budget proposal for next year and get an update on the town’s noise ordinance. Read the full agenda here.
Orange County Commissioners will also be focusing on the budget when they meet Tuesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. County Manager Bonnie Hammersley unveiled her budget proposal last week; this week’s meeting will feature a public hearing, where residents can weigh in with their thoughts and questions. The Chapel Hill Town Council will discuss Town Manager Maurice Jones’ budget proposal at a virtual meeting Wednesday night, May 11, at 6:30. Council members will also discuss proposed uses for federal COVID relief funds, hear an update on affordable housing, and provide feedback on recent recommendations from the Booker Creek Working Group. Get the full agenda here.
Finally, the Carrboro Town Council does not have a budget discussion on its agenda this week, but council members will discuss another big item: the new Carrboro Connects 2022-2042 comprehensive plan. Council members may also vote to adopt the plan when they meet on Tuesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. Click here for a link to the full agenda.
