Between the review of racial equity plans, the education of new elected officials and working around the Triangle’s first snowfall in years, January was a busy time for the local governments in Orange County. This month, the governments will settle into a more regular rhythm of meetings uninterrupted by a holiday break, with a variety of projects and policies to review.
Here is when elected officials in Orange County and Chatham County will meet in February.
Chapel Hill Town Government
With its three newest members now on board and up to speed, the Chapel Hill Town Council looks to have a regular February ahead with three meetings.
The month begins with a work session for the council set for Wednesday, February 2, that will begin at 6:30. The agenda, which includes discussing re-striping on West Franklin Street and discussion about the police station property on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, can be found here.
Then, Chapel Hill’s elected officials will hold two regular business meetings on Wednesday, February 9 and Wednesday, February 23. Those are expected to begin at 7 p.m.
Like the other Orange County’s local governments, the Chapel Hill Town Council is continuing to meet virtually and that includes in February.

Carrboro Town Government
The Carrboro Town Council met on the very first day of the month to discuss the county’s One Orange racial equity framework and other items. That meeting’s agenda can be found here.
The council is also set to meet every other Tuesday in February. Presently, Carrboro’s elected officials will hold business meetings on February 8, February 15 and February 22.

Hillsborough Town Government
With the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners’ pattern of meeting once every two weeks, the board had the first week of February off from business meetings.
But the commissioners are slated to return to action on Monday, February 14 and again on Monday, February 28.
Each meeting of the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners is set for 7 p.m. The public will be able to view and listen to the meetings by live streaming video on the town’s YouTube channel.

Orange County Government
Similar to the Carrboro Town Council, the Orange County Board of Commissioners met on Tuesday night, the first of the month. Materials from the business meeting can be found here.
Beyond the initial meeting, February is set to be a busy one for the county commissioners. The North Carolina City and County Management Association’s winter seminar is being held from February 2 through February 4, with Orange County sending representation. The following Tuesday, February 8, the board is holding a work session that is slated to start at 7 p.m.
Then, starting on Saturday, February 12, the National Association of Counties is hosting its legislative conference in Washington D.C., which is marked in the county commissioners’ calendar. Because the conference’s length interferes with the board’s Tuesday schedule, a business meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 17.
The following Tuesday, February 22, is also not an ordinary meeting: it is the regular joint school board meeting between Orange County Schools, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and the Board of County Commissioners. That virtual gathering is also expected to begin at 7 p.m.
Finally, to close the month, the county commissioners are set to hold their annual retreat to begin budget discussions and to visit other goals for 2022. The board retreat is slated for Thursday, February 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Chatham County Government
The Chatham County Board of Commissioners has fewer meetings in February compared to their Orange County peers, but have a key one up first.
On Monday, February 7, the board will meet at the Historic Chatham County Courthouse at 5 p.m. The agenda is chiefly for the commissioners to appoint a new board member to replace District 4’s Jim Crawford, whose seat has been vacant since he stepped down at the end of 2021.
The board will swear in its selection on Monday, February 21, at its next work session and business meeting pairing. The county commissioners will hold a work session starting at 2 p.m. at the courthouse.
