Hillsborough’s newest commissioner Matt Hughes will attend his first town board meeting next month.

The Hillsborough native was appointed by the Board to replace longtime commissioner Brian Lowen, who will be officially stepping down from his seat this week.

Hillsborough Mayor Tom Stevens is optimistic about Hughes’ role on the board.

“We’re very happy with Matt Hughes,” said Stevens. “We’ve certainly had a lot of citizens who’ve recommended him. He’s had a lot of experience (and is) knowledgeable about government.”

Stevens says he was impressed by the pool of candidates that showed interest in the position.

“Everyone had some real strengths,” said Stevens. “I think the board was pretty clear that Matt was the top candidate, but all the candidates did a really nice job.”

Hughes will be sworn in at the board’s April 9th meeting, which will be held at the Whitted building and will also serve as an official goodbye to Commissioner Lowen.
