Chatham County Commissioners are scheduled to vote Monday night on a memorandum of understanding between the county and the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy as the two parties discuss “reimagining” the Confederate statue in downtown Pittsboro.

The memorandum states that both parties, “agree to meet, cooperate and work together in good faith to develop a mutually agreeable framework.” The document goes on to note that this agreement “does not commit either party to any particular course of action but does commit both parties to discussion and negotiation in good faith.”

Last week, County Commissioner Chair Mike Dasher told the Chatham News + Record that some discussions have taken place between himself and Barbara Pugh, president of the Winnie Davis Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and that they have been productive.

The memorandum is on Monday’s agenda for the commissioners, listed under the board priorities section.

There has been tumultuous debate over what to do with the Confederate statue in Chatham County, with an entire commissioners meeting in May set aside just for public comment. In mid-April, Chatham commissioners voted 4 to 1 to ask county attorney Richard Rose to explore the laws surrounding the monument and the possible options for the Chatham commissioners moving forward.

The full memorandum set to be voted on Monday night can be found here. The commissioners meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Historic Courthouse Courtroom.
