****UPDATE: The council approved moving meetings from Monday to Wednesday this fall to serve as a test period.****
Chapel Hill Town Council meetings have been taking place on Mondays for at least 45 years, according to former council member Gerry Cohen, but that may be changing.
The discussion to move council meetings to Wednesdays is gaining traction after being introduced earlier this year.
Mayor Pam Hemminger says the council is considering changing the meetings from Mondays to Wednesdays for several reasons.
“There are many positives to moving the meeting so that people have the weekend to look over materials and spend some time really diving into the details.”
With the meetings held on Mondays, Hemminger says often times council members and town staff have to work through the weekend in order to be prepared before Monday’s meeting. In contrast, a Wednesday meeting would allow more time.
“The staff has the opportunity on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday to get answers back to council members and the public. We get a lot of questions from the public.”
George Cianciolo said in an email that he would “definitely be in favor of such a move,” but not everyone on the council is on board. Maria Palmer said Wednesday meetings would conflict with church services and choir practices, and suggested consulting local churches before deciding.
The council will take a vote on whether to move the meeting day at Monday night’s meeting scheduled for seven o’clock in Chapel Hill Town Hall.
