Budget season is beginning to wrap up for town and county governments: elected boards have until the end of the month to approve their budgets for next year, and several boards are slated to hold votes this week. The Chapel Hill Town Council is bucking the trend, though: instead of budget discussions, they’re focusing on a plan for apartments on the corner of Rosemary and Columbia. Last month, council members objected to several aspects of the plan, from parking requirements (or the lack thereof) to street-level retail opportunities (or the lack thereof). Grubb Properties has since tweaked their proposal, and they’ll present the new version to Council members on Wednesday.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners will vote to approve next year’s town budget when they meet Monday, June 13, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. Get the full agenda here.

The Carrboro Town Council is also focusing on the budget, with a work session on Tuesday, June 14, at 7 p.m. in Town Hall. Click here for a link to the full agenda.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets virtually on Wednesday, June 15, at 7 p.m. Council members will continue discussing plans for that new apartment building on the corner of Columbia and Rosemary, though they don’t plan to vote on that until September. There will be some votes on Wednesday, though: council members are set to approve a special use permit for plans to replace the Hardee’s on Fordham Boulevard with a Fifth Third Bank, and they’re also slated to approve a rezoning request for Gimghoul Castle to allow for a renovation there. The Orange County and Chapel Hill-Carrboro school boards each meet this week as well. Click here for the agenda for the Orange County school board meeting, Tuesday, June 14, at 6:30 p.m. in the Whitted Building in Hillsborough. The CHCCS board meets virtually Thursday, June 16, at 6 p.m.; their meeting agenda has not yet been posted, but will be available at this link later in the week.

Chatham and Durham Counties

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners is meeting Monday, June 13, at 7 p.m. in the Chatham County Agriculture and Conference Center. Board members will get an update on the town’s wastewater capacity and consider approving a plan to build townhomes in Chatham Park. Get the full agenda here.

In Durham, the City Council is holding a special meeting on Monday, June 13, at 6 p.m. in Sanctuary of the Monument of Faith Church on Simmons Street. It’s a Community Conversation with the Hayti neighborhood, with a focus on housing. Get the full agenda here.

Durham County Commissioners also meet on Monday, June 13, at 7 p.m. in commissioners’ chambers. Commissioners are slated to vote on County Manager Kimberly Sowell’s budget proposal for next year. Get the full agenda at this link.
