Two organizations in Chatham County have been selected by the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health to host graduate-level students as part of a service-learning course program.

Those students will spend the next year working to address real-world public health concerns with groups that include the Chatham County Council on Aging and Chatham Health Alliance.

Students assigned to the Health Alliance are likely to continue working on the Worksite Wellness Chatham Toolkit, which was conceived earlier this year to mitigate employee obesity.

The Council on Aging will acquaint students with the field of geriatrics in a rapidly aging county where 40 percent of residents are expected to be over the age of 60 by 2035.

Concerns addressed last year by students in the program included accident prevention with Orange County EMS and recycling behavior with Orange County Solid Waste Management.

The UNC Gillings School of Global Public Heath seeks to apply local solutions to global health problems as the top-ranked public school of public health by U.S. News and World Report.
