Ten North Carolinians have died this season from the flu, according to state health officials.

The state’s Department of Health and Human Services reported one influenza-associated death from the week of December 22 through December 28. The fatality brings the state’s death count to ten since the season began in late September.

According to the DHHS weekly report, nine of the ten deaths have been to residents aged 65 and older. Of the more than 200 flu-related deaths logged in North Carolina last season, more than half were people age 65 and older. The other death this season fell within the 25-49 years-old range.

The first flu-related death in the state this year was reported in early October.

The current flu season began October 29 and runs through May 26.
