Chapel Hill Town Manager Maurice Jones announced Vencelin Harris has been appointed as the new fire chief of the Chapel Hill Fire Department effective February 3.

Harris currently serves as Chapel Hill’s emergency management coordinator and began his career more than 25 years ago at the Town of Chapel Hill. He has served in nearly every capacity at the Chapel Hill Fire Department since 1994 from firefighter to fire captain to battalion chief.

“Chief Harris brings a wealth of experience to this critically important position,” Jones said in a release on Friday. “His steady leadership during emergency situations, deep commitment to our community and passion for public safety made him the right person for the position. I have great confidence in his ability to direct our fire department.”

Harris replaces former fire chief Matt Sullivan, who announced his retirement in 2019 after 32 years with the town.

“I am honored to be given this opportunity and to serve our community in the role of fire chief,” Harris said. “I look forward to leading the department as we continue to grow as a community partner.”

Born and raised in Durham, Harris received an associate’s degree in general studies from Durham Technical Community College in 2014.
