The Town of Chapel Hill broke ground on a new affordable housing community Monday.
The project is a public-private partnership between the Town of Chapel Hill, Community Housing Partners, and Southway Builders. Located near Umstead Park, the reimagined Trinity Court will replace its existing 40 units with 53 new apartments. Trinity Court was originally built in 1975, but closed in 2018 due to poor building conditions.
The community will serve households earning between 30 and 80 percent of the Area Median Income, expanding affordable housing opportunities on town-owned land. Adjacent to the Northside neighborhood, the property is within walking distance of Northside Elementary School, bus stops, and more Chapel Hill amenities.
The development earned a 9% Low Income Housing Tax Credit award in 2022, bringing more than $10 million to the project. The redesign will also feature sustainable materials and consider energy efficiency for the two and three bedroom apartments.
The construction’s completion is estimated for August 2025.
