A Hillsborough man is facing fraud charges from the North Carolina Insurance Commissioner’s Office.

Officials from the state insurance agency said in a news release on Friday that 34-year-old Dominique Denice Johnson, of Rocky Ridge Road in Hillsborough, has been charged with a felony count of obtaining property by false pretense. Johnson allegedly accepted $1,300 for services that were not rendered, including painting, delivering gravel and pressure washing.

“Insurance fraud affects our economy. Not only does it damage insurance companies, it cheats businesses and consumers too,” state Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey said in Friday’s release. “This kind of white-collar crime is unacceptable. That’s why I’ve doubled the number of Special Agents to investigate insurance fraud. Cracking down on fraud will put more money in the pockets of businesses and consumers.”

Causey said that his office estimates “fraud costs North Carolinians between 15 and 20 cents on every dollar paid on insurance premiums.”

The offense allegedly occurred between February 1 and April 1, and Johnson was served with a criminal summons on July 29, according to the release. He’s due in court on August 5.

Causey encouraged reporting suspected fraud to the Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at (919) 807-6840.
