A second person is facing charges of aiding and abetting the convict who escaped state custody last week in Orange County.

A release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said law enforcement officers arrested 43-year-old Monique Brady — who they identified as Ramone Alston’s sister. Her charges of aiding and abetting a fugitive, plus harboring an escapee, are both felonies. According to the arrest warrant issued, Brady is a resident of Graham, N.C.

Alston was captured in Kannapolis on Friday, August 16 after nearly three full days of evading law enforcement after he ran from a North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections vehicle arriving to UNC Hospitals in Hillsborough. The 30-year-old is serving a life sentence over his connection to the 2015 murder of Maleah Williams, an infant who was shot in Chapel Hill while in her mother’s arms and later died.

Brady is the second person now charged with helping Alston in his escape, as Jacobia Crisp of Burlington was also arrested on August 17 for aiding and abetting charges. Crisp made her first appearance in Orange County court on Tuesday and is released from the detention center after making bond.

Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood added in Wednesday’s release that their investigation is ongoing and more arrests are possible.

We owe it to our community and Maleah’s family,” he said, “to hold everyone who assisted Alston accountable for the danger and fear their actions caused.”

Brady was issued a $30,000 secure bond on Wednesday and placed into the Orange County Detention Center. She is scheduled for her first appearance in court on the charges Thursday at 2 p.m.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said if anyone has any additional information about Alston’s escape or the ensuing manhunt, they are encouraged to contact Sergeant Goodwin at 919-245-2918.
