Police are seeking help from the public to investigate an early morning vehicle crash that injured a bicyclist on a busy Chapel Hill road.
The Chapel Hill Police Department shared a release Wednesday morning requesting information and assistance following a hit-and-run that happened on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Police say a preliminary investigation found that a bicyclist traveling south on the road was struck by a vehicle driving south near Municipal Drive around 5:52 a.m. The driver then left the scene of the crash.
Police did not disclose any description of the vehicle involved in the collision.
The bicyclist was injured in the crash, according to the police department’s release. Authorities said the person was treated and released from UNC Hospitals Wednesday morning.
A spokesperson for the Chapel Hill Police Department confirmed to Chapelboro that Wednesday’s incident is the fifth vehicle collision with a bicyclist reported so far in 2022. One collision was ultimately fatal: a car door hit a passing bicyclist on West Franklin Street in late January, leading the biker to later die from his injuries. There have also been four pedestrian-involved vehicle collisions.
Anyone who may have information regarding the hit-and-run is encouraged to call 911 or contact the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760. Those who prefer to remain anonymous can use the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crimestoppers hotline at 919-942-7515.
