DURHAM – A man with a gun near NCCU’s campus Monday night prompted a lockdown and ended with police shooting and killing the gunman.

According to WRAL, Durham police tracked a criminal suspect near the campus late Monday. Campus officials locked down the campus at about 10:15 p.m. as police suspected the person to be armed.

The man was found in a wooded area near Cecil and Lincoln streets just before midnight. That’s when he reportedly challenged police with a gun. At about 1:15 a.m. the lockdown was lifted after police shot and killed the man, according to NCCU Police Chief Tim Bellamy.

The gunman was not a student. His identity has not been released and it is unclear at this time why Durham Police were looking for him.
