North Carolina saw its first day of more than 3,000 new COVID-19 cases reported on Wednesday.

The milestone in single-day new cases comes after a stretch of recent single-day highs, capped off by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services revealing 3,119 residents had positive test results. Data from the department showed the state also has maintained a seven-day average of more than 2,000 new cases each day for three straight weeks.

Additionally, Wednesday’s total pushed the state over the benchmark of 300,000 total cases of COVID-19 among residents since the pandemic began.

Hospitalizations in the state and the percentage of positive tests also increased, with 1,246 North Carolinians currently hospitalized and 7.9 percent of coronavirus test returning as positive.

With other coronavirus trends also either increasing or remaining elevated, Governor Roy Cooper and health officials announced on Tuesday North Carolina’s Phase 3 of reopening would be extended. Originally meant to end in October, this latest extension will maintain indoor and outdoor gathering limits and other public health measures through at least December 4.

Cooper also issued a message on Twitter about the new single-day high reported Wednesday.
