As a fire burned on the roof of Mediterranean Deli Saturday afternoon, many in Chapel Hill and miles from the raptly followed updates on social media. The blaze, which started around 3 p.m. and is being investigated by the Chapel Hill Fire Department, severely damaged the popular restaurant — while smoke and water from firefighters also damaged other businesses in the West Franklin Street building.

No injuries were reported by emergency officials and the extent of the damage is unclear as of Saturday night. But the Chapel Hill and Carrboro community quickly rallied around the businesses on social media, voicing their support and concern over the fire.

Several elected officials in the two towns shared their thoughts on Twitter, including council members from each Chapel Hill and Carrboro as well as Carrboro Mayor Damon Seils.

Additionally, Chapel Hill Town Council member Jess Anderson shared that local leaders and the Chamber of Commerce are planning to meet on Sunday to figure out next steps and focus efforts toward specific fundraisers.

In the meantime, dozens of community members shared support of Mediterranean Deli by posting about memories of the restaurant or how much the local staple means to them. Others made sure to highlight the nearby businesses also affected by the fire.
