It’s Safety Tip Tuesday on 97.9 The Hill, presented by Safe Kids of Orange & Chatham counties, along with Pam Herndon State Farm. Every Tuesday on 97.9 The Hill we hear from local family safety organizations as they share different safety tips and helpful reminders to keep us safe. These range from helmet safety, to proper prescription storage, and everything in between.

Brighton McConnell recently had a conversation with Sara Martin, the Prevention Programming Specialist for Insight Human Services, Inc., and George Greger-Holt, the Coordinator for Chatham Drug Free, to discuss safe medication storage and disposal.

One of the biggest issues that leads to young people abusing prescription medications is how “normal” they’ve become. As George Gregor-Holt shared, “Prescription medications are ubiquitous. They’re on TV, they’re in our medicine cabinets, they’re on our kitchen tables and young people see them as not harmful.” A way to combat this normalization is to frequently remind the young people in your home that prescriptions are for specific people, with specific illnesses or conditions, and openly discuss the harm they can cause when abused.

Both George and Sara recommended the use of lock boxes to keep prescription medications out of the wrong hands, as well as proper disposal when the prescription is no longer needed.

Listen to the full conversation with Brighton, Sara and George below, and tune into 97.9 The Hill every week to hear more important reminders on Safety Tip Tuesday!
