Voters reported long lines and heavy turnout on day one of early voting in Orange County – and the numbers bear them out.

The Orange County Board of Elections reports 5,390 residents cast ballots on the first day of early voting. That puts Orange County on track to shatter previous early voting records. Four years ago, there were 3,864 votes cast in Orange County on the first day of early voting – and back in 2008, there were only 2,925 votes cast.

The heaviest turnout was at Carrboro Town Hall, with 1448 ballots cast, but more than 1400 voters also cast ballots at the Seymour Center and the Board of Elections office in Hillsborough. 762 residents cast ballots at Chapel of the Cross on Franklin Street; 363 cast ballots at the Efland Ruritan Club.

Other counties in the Triangle also reported high turnout: 7,785 voters cast ballots on day one in Durham County, and 12,253 voters turned out in Wake.

Early voting continues through Saturday, November 5.
