The Chapel Hill Town Council will consider authorizing the Town Manager to sign a contract to purchase the roughly 35-acre American Legion Property for $7.9 million at Monday night’s meeting.
The offer was made public when the meeting agenda was released on Wednesday.
The proposed sale of the property to a developer has been a controversial topic in Chapel Hill throughout 2016. Woodfield Investments entered into a contract to purchase the property for up to $10 million, based on the number of apartments approved by the council. That proposal was initially moving forward after a previous version of the Town Council passed on the town’s right of first refusal for the property.
Woodfield submitted a concept plan for the property earlier this year. But Legion officials offered the town – and the new version of the Town Council – the opportunity to purchase the property once again at a council meeting.
Officials say an initial $3.6 million payment for the property would come from the town’s fund balance while the source of two future payments would be determined at a later date.
The council will vote on the proposal at Monday night’s meeting in Town Hall at seven o’clock.
