Why Democracy Fails: A Tale of Two Napoleons
October 23, 2025
As authoritarianism gains ground globally, historical comparisons to past dictatorships have become increasingly common. This engaging evening flips the script by exploring the conditions within democratic systems that enable strongmen to seize power. Focusing on the years preceding the First and Second French Empires, historians Lloyd Kramer and Max Owre will examine the vulnerabilities of the regimes that paved the way for Napoleon I and Napoleon III. Participants will be challenged to think critically about democracy today and its role in preserving accountability and the rule of law.
Keep the discussion going after the event at an informal, convivial gathering across the street at Glasshalfull restaurant.
