Don Hartman, June 21, 1930-August 2, 2024
Don Douglas Hartman passed away at his home in Chapel Hill, NC on Friday morning, August 2, 2024. Don was born and raised in Carnegie, Oklahoma. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma, and then served as a Lieutenant in the Air Force, 1952-1954. He then began a business career with Container Corporation of America and served CCA in their Mexico City division for 14 years. During that time, he met and married Marilyn.

Returning to the US in 1972, Don, Marilyn and their daughters settled in Chapel Hill where Don worked at the Environmental Protection Agency. He also became owner of Circle Travel and Bresler’s Ice Cream Parlor.
Don was active in several community organizations, most prominently El Futuro and the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, both located in Durham. He coordinated several political campaigns for, among others, Representative David Price and Governor Jim Hunt. He also served for the Chapel Hill Concert Series, North Carolina Symphony, YMCA, Dispute Settlement Center, ACLU and the AIDS Service Agency.
In his spare time, he loved to travel, play the piano, play bridge, read books and do puzzles.
Don is survived by his wife Marilyn, daughters Josie, Amy, and daughter-in-law Sarah Kuhaneck.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 17, 3:00 p.m. at the Carol Woods Retirement Community where he and Marilyn resided. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to El Futuro, Duke Hospice or ERUUF.
