According to reports by both Inside Carolina and ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the UNC men’s basketball program is hiring former Providence head coach Kim English to Michael Malone’s staff in Chapel Hill.
English spent the past three seasons with the Friars, though Providence finished with losing record in both the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons, leading to English’s firing. Prior to that, English was head coach at George Mason for two seasons.
An accomplished player, English starred at Missouri for four seasons and won 107 games, the most of any senior class in program history. As a senior, English averaged 14.5 points per game, shot 45.9 percent on three-pointers, was named third team All-Big 12 and helped the Tigers win the Big 12 Tournament. The Detroit Pistons selected English No. 44 overall in the 2012 NBA Draft.
After three seasons of playing professionally, English began his coaching career as an assistant at Tulsa to Frank Haith, his college coach at Missouri. He moved on to Colorado in 2017 and then to Tennessee in 2019, serving under the Volunteers’ Rick Barnes. George Mason hired him as head coach in 2021.
English is the second reported new addition to Malone’s staff in Chapel Hill. Multiple outlets reported the hiring of former Arkansas assistant Chuck Martin last week.
