The Chapel Hill Fire Department responded to a duplex fire Saturday morning, which it said displaced eight people and did not cause any injuries.

The department first responded to the structure fire on Old University Station Road at Weaver Dairy Road at 6:10 a.m. Upon arriving, firefighters noticed flames escaping from the back. The fire was contained within one side of the duplex, while the other side only sustained smoke and water damage.

“We’re grateful to share there are no reports of injuries,” said Fire Chief Jay Mebane. “Our partners at the American Red Cross are responding to help eight people who can’t return to their homes due to the damage. I’m deeply appreciative of our fire rescue crews who responded quickly and stopped the fire from spreading to the neighboring unit.”

As of 9 a.m. Saturday, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
