The Chapel Hill High School boys’ soccer team is headed to the 7A state championship match after upsetting New Hanover in the state semifinals Tuesday night. The Tigers will play Marvin Ridge High School, one of the two No. 1 seeds in the tournament field, in the championship match Friday in Greensboro.

Chapel Hill entered the tournament field as a No. 4 seed and received a first-round bye. The Tigers then defeated Cleveland High School 4-1 in the second round, Southern (Durham) High School 2-0 in the third round and Clayton High School 5-3 in the state quarterfinals, setting up the semifinal match with No. 3 seed New Hanover.

In the semifinals, the Tigers overcame a first-half deficit and defeated the Wildcats 3-1 with a pair of goals in extra time.

Chapel Hill enters the championship match with an 18-4 overall record, while top-seeded Marvin Ridge is 21-3-1. The match will be played on the campus of Guilford College.

This is not the first time Chapel Hill’s boys’ soccer team has competed for a state championship. The Tigers won the title in 1983, and that team was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame earlier this year. Notably, the team’s roster that year featured future North Carolina governor Josh Stein.

East Chapel Hill High School also made a strong run in the 6A playoffs. The Wildcats were a No. 3 seed in the field and defeated West Brunswick, Harnett Central and No. 2 seed Jacksonville on their way to the state semifinals. Their season ended there, where top-seeded Middle Creek won 2-0. East Chapel Hill ends the season with a 17-4-2 overall record.
