This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by Hendrick Southpoint, is Nabarun Dasgupta.

Dasgupta is an epidemiologist who heads up UNC’s opioid data lab. They help people with substance use by giving them information about what substances they’re actually using by analyzing street drugs. When someone has an emergency or is seeking help, there could be other harms associated with the mixes in the substances. The data lab focuses on getting the information back to the people who need them first. Dasgupta has also worked to get naloxone available in communities around the U.S. to prevent overdose deaths. With the MacArthur ‘Genius’ Grant he has received, he’s hoping to take his work international.
