A Miami goal in the 77th minute broke a 1-1 tie and sent UNC to a 2-1 defeat Thursday night in Coral Gables. It’s Carolina’s second loss in its last three outings.
The two teams played a scoreless first half, despite UNC holding a decisive 6-0 advantage in total shots. The Hurricane goalkeeper stopped both of the Tar Heels’ shots on target. Miami stormed out of the locker room in the second half, scoring a goal on its first shot of the night in the 51st minute.
Carolina found an equalizer in the 68th minute off the right foot of Linda Ullmark, who tapped in a misplayed ball in the box. The goal was upheld after a VAR review for a potential offsides. But Miami had one more trick up its sleeve, as the Hurricanes’ Cisel Akguel scored less than 10 minutes later to restore the one-goal lead. UNC didn’t manage a single shot on goal for the remainder of the night. Despite the Tar Heels’ 12-4 edge in total shots, only three of their efforts were on target. Both of Miami’s shots on target ended up in the back of the net.
The loss drops UNC to 10-6 overall and 4-4 in ACC play. It was also Miami’s first win in league play this season; the Hurricanes had entered Thursday with an ACC record of 0-7-1. Carolina sits in 10th place in the league standings and is in danger of missing the ACC Tournament, which fields only the top six teams in the conference. The Tar Heels have missed the ACC Tournament just one time in program history.
