The UNC field hockey and women’s soccer teams were both in action Sunday, and both sides earned wins: field hockey won at Old Dominion, and women’s soccer defeated Pitt at Dorrance Field.
In Norfolk, Carolina controlled possession against the Monarchs and took an early lead thanks to a first-quarter goal from Isabel Boere. Kara Heck doubled the lead in the second quarter, though Old Dominion would get that goal back less than a minute later. UNC led 2-1 at halftime.
In the second half, the Tar Heels tacked on a pair of insurance goals in the third quarter thanks to Dani Mendez and Charly Bruder. The lead stayed at 4-1 until the final buzzer, as the Carolina defense didn’t allow another shot on target for the Monarchs after their second-quarter goal. UNC finished with a 16-6 edge in overall shots and a 9-1 lead in shots on goal. Bruder led the way for the Tar Heels with six total shots, four of which were on goal.
Carolina is now 10-1 overall this season and will return to ACC competition next Friday when it visits No. 2 Virginia in Charlottesville Friday at 5 p.m.
Over at Dorrance Field in the women’s soccer match, a Linda Ullmark goal in the 18th minute gave UNC a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. The score stayed that way until halftime, though not for lack of trying on the part of Pitt. The Panthers put pressure on the Tar Heel defense and forced five saves out of goalkeeper Hannah Johann in the opening 45 minutes.
Pitt finally found a way through Johann less than two minutes into the second half, equalizing at 1-1. It would take less than 10 minutes for UNC to respond, as Lauren Malsom continued an excellent freshman season by corralling a cross from Olivia Thomas and blasting it into the Pitt net. Thomas would do the work herself in the 78th minute, capping off a solo run into the penalty area with a picture-perfect strike into the top corner. It was her 11th goal this season.
The 3-1 win is UNC’s second in a row after dropping two straight matches and improves the Tar Heels to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in ACC competition. Up next for Carolina is its shortest road trip of the season, as the team will visit Duke next Sunday at 1 p.m. in Durham.
