All Y’all Records co-founder Dave Hedeman stopped by Live & Local this week, ahead of a day party at Hopscotch to celebrate the release of the label’s first-ever compilation album.

“We’re super excited,” Hedeman says about the album. “We’re about a year into this (venture), and it was our vision to hopefully, once a year, bring a collection of bands onto a LP and give all these local bands a platform. And we’re super excited. It sounds amazing.”

It’s a milestone achievement for All Y’all Records, which has rapidly become a major player in the Triangle’s music scene – even though Hedeman and Nick Stroud launched it barely a year ago.

The album – simply titled “All Y’all Records, Volume 1” – consists of nine tracks from artists and bands on the All Y’all label, including local favorites like Jack the Radio, The Yardarm, and Charles Latham & the Borrowed Band.

The highlight, though, is “Mississippi Blue,” a brand-new song by the late Reese McHenry. McHenry recorded the vocals last year, while battling the cancer that ultimately claimed her life – but her voice on the track is just as powerful and heart-wrenching as ever.

“That’s probably the one we’re most proud of,” Hedeman says. “It’s going to be a tearjerker for a lot of people, I think…

“I feel very honored. This was not what I thought I was signing up for when Nick and I created this thing, to be going through something like this. And just having any part in trying to keep her legacy alive, I think is absolutely the least we can do. And so it’s special to us that we were even able to do this.”

The album drops on Sunday, September 7 – and All Y’all is celebrating in style, with a free seven-hour day party at Pour House in Raleigh as part of the Hopscotch Music Festival. The festivities kick off at noon and continue into the evening, with performances on two different stages by All Y’all artists including the Gone Ghosts (featuring Hedeman) and Heat Preacher (featuring Stroud) alongside Charles Latham, Rotoglow, The Yardarm, and more – plus a supergroup called the All Y’all Country All-Stars.
