Dean Stoyer was named the next vice chancellor for communications at UNC Monday afternoon. Stoyer comes to Chapel Hill after stints with Nike, Under Armour and in the NBA.

In its release announcing its pick, the university said Stoyer’s first day will be June 30.

“At Carolina, we want every North Carolinian to feel connected to our university and to recognize it as an accessible institution that makes a difference in their lives,” said Chancellor Lee Roberts. “Stoyer’s perspective, leadership and ability to galvanize audiences position him perfectly to accelerate this mission, elevating Carolina’s brand and fostering deeper engagement with our community.”

Stoyer worked with Nike for nearly 18 years, finishing his time with the company as its senior director of global communications. Prior to his time with Nike, Stoyer also worked as the marketing and communications director for ESPN’s coverage of the X Games. Since leaving Nike in 2016, Stoyer served as the vice president for brand marketing and communications at Under Armour and the chief marketing and communications officer for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and the Footprint Center, the arena which hosts both franchises.

“Stoyer brings a wealth of expertise in crafting brand strategies and leading high-performing teams across industries,” read UNC’s release. “During his career, he has led global campaigns, managed crisis communications and provided counsel to executives and top athletes to align messaging for maximum impact.

“I am honored to accept this appointment and humbly thank Chancellor Roberts for entrusting this mission to me,” Stoyer said. “As I shared with the teammates, faculty and leaders I met with throughout this process, I have spent the past 30 years preparing for this role, and will bring my best to bear for UNC and all North Carolinians.”

Stoyer will fill the position left by Kamrhan Farwell, who departed the university after handling communications since September 2022 after coming to UNC from the University of Missouri.
