The Orange County Sheriff’s Office announced a felony peeping charge against a local elementary school teacher on Friday.
A release from the office said deputies arrested 46-year-old Robert Herman of Mebane over one count of secret peeping reported by a concerned citizen. The Orange County Schools district, who employs Herman as a teacher at Efland-Cheeks Global Elementary School, said the allegations are over inappropriate behavior involving a student.
Herman was removed by sheriff’s deputies from the Efland-Cheeks campus on Friday, according to the school district, which added it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. He is suspended with pay and will not be allowed at any Orange County Schools campus or facility while the allegations are investigated — which Friday’s release said is district policy.
“Nothing is more important to Orange County Schools and all our public safety partners than the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff,” the school district said in a statement. “Please know how much we appreciate our students, families, and community members who help us keep our schools safe at all times, and we always thank the Orange County Sheriff’s Office for their continued partnership.”
According to Orange County Schools, Herman joined the Efland-Cheeks Global Elementary staff in August as a teacher for academically and intellectually gifted (AIG) students. He previously taught at Pathways Elementary School from August 2018 to July 2021 as a third-grade classroom teacher.
Peeping is a Class I felony, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. After Herman’s appearance at the magistrate’s office, he was released upon written promise to appear in court on the peeping charge on Monday at 2 p.m.
Orange County Schools added in its release that any students, family members, employees or community members can us the district’s anonymous reporting system to share information that can help keep students safe. Visit Say Something’s website or use the 1-844-5-SAY-NOW hotline (1-844-572-9669). Additionally, investigators with the sheriff’s office said anyone with relevant information to the allegations is encouraged to call Investigator P. Gilchrist at 919-245-2928.
