This series of posts will be made weekly on Chapelboro to help inform our community about local government meetings. All meeting days, locations and times may be subject to change. Check town, county, and school district websites for additional information.

With many town boards taking the week off, the next seven days in local government are light on substance – but high on ceremony, with Hillsborough and Pittsboro both swearing in their new mayors. In addition, Orange County Commissioners will tackle the county’s capital needs, Durham County Commissioners will discuss affordable housing, and the Hillsborough town board will look back – and look forward – on their finances.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

New mayor Mark Bell will officially take the oath of office at this week’s meeting of the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners, 7 p.m. Monday, December 11. Newly elected (and reelected) commissioners Meaghun Darab, Matt Hughes and Evelyn Lloyd will be sworn in as well; then the board will tackle their agenda, which includes the results of an audit from the 2023 fiscal year and a look ahead to budget talks for 2024-25. Orange County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 12, in the Southern Human Services Center. Commissioners will discuss plans to address the county’s capital needs, including maintenance and improvements in the schools; they’ll also discuss recommendations for how to use money from the national opioid settlement. Chatham and Durham Counties

Newly elected mayor Kyle Shipp will take the oath of office at this week’s Pittsboro Town Board meeting, alongside town commissioners John Bonitz, Jay Farrell and John Foley. That meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, December 11; get the full agenda here.

Durham County Commissioners meet twice this week. Their regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, December 11; commissioners will hear a presentation on Medicaid expansion and hold a public hearing on a proposal to simplify codes for affordable housing development. Then commissioners will reconvene at 9 a.m. Tuesday, December 12, for a joint meeting with city officials, to hear updates from Urban Ministries of Durham and the Homeless Services Advisory Committee.
