The world of collegiate women’s tennis continues to have a distinct light blue tint. UNC sophomore Reese Brantmeier swept the singles and doubles titles at the ITA Fall National Championships in San Diego on Sunday. She’s the fourth Tar Heel in the last five years to win the women’s singles title at the event.

Brantmeier was one of three Tar Heels to compete in the singles draw, and one of two (along with Anika Yarlagadda) to advance to the quarterfinals. Brantmeier, the No. 2 seed in the singles draw, defeated opponents from Oklahoma, Michigan, South Carolina and Oklahoma State on her way to Sunday’s championship match against South Carolina’s Ayana Akli.

Though Akli won the first set 6-2 – the first set Brantmeier had dropped in the entire competition – Brantmeier came back strong with a 6-2 win in the second and a 7-5 win in the third, giving her the championship.

And Brantmeier wasn’t done. She and partner Elizabeth Scotty would compete later that day in the women’s doubles final. Brantmeier and Scotty were the field’s No. 1 seed, having defeated teams from Texas, Missouri, Texas Tech and Oklahoma on their way to the championship match. There, the pair faced off against Oklahoma State’s Ange Oby Kajuru (Brantmeier had defeated Kajuru in singles) and Anastasiya Komar. As they’d done all week long, Brantmeier and Scotty made light work of their opponents, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. The pair didn’t drop a set in five matches.

It’s the second time in the last three years and third time overall a UNC team has won the women’s doubles draw. It’s the second ITA fall doubles title for Scotty, who won in 2021 with Fiona Crawley.

The ITA Fall National Championships mark the end of the fall season for Carolina, which will return to action after the new year to defend its NCAA team title.
