The UNC football program officially named Jason Jones as its new cornerbacks coach on Monday morning. Jones comes to Chapel Hill after spending three seasons coaching safeties at Indiana, where he spent 2021 on the same staff as UNC co-defensive coordinator Charlton Warren.

“We’re thrilled that Jason, his wife Kysha, and their children Andrew, Jace, Jathan and Jarah are joining the Carolina football family,” said Carolina head coach Mack Brown. “He was highly sought after during this window and had a number of attractive offers available to him, so we’re excited he’ll be joining our staff. Jason has a wealth of experience coaching the secondary, and having worked with Coach Warren previously, he already has a firm understanding of our approach on defense.”

In his three seasons with Indiana, Jones coached two Hoosiers to All-Big Ten recognition, and his secondary led the conference in interceptions during the 2020 season with 17.

Before that, Jones served stints with Florida Atlantic, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Rice and Alabama. His longest stint came with the Rebels, where Jones served as co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach. In 2015, Jones’ defense registered four interceptions returned for touchdowns and 23 total turnovers, third in the SEC. FootballScoop named Jones the National Defensive Backs Coach of the Year in 2014.

Jones will replace Dre Bly, who had served as cornerbacks coach at Carolina since the beginning of the 2019 season. Bly was relieved of his duties earlier in January.
