Don Chapman, a senior defensive back on the UNC football team, was arrested in Chatham County Wednesday night, according to reports.

Inside Carolina reported the news of Chapman’s charges on Thursday afternoon, citing confirmation by the Chatham County clerk of court. Chapman is charged with domestic criminal trespassing, assault on a female and misdemeanor battery of an unborn child.

WRAL reported further details, saying a judge shared a police report from the incident. According to the outlet, Chapman’s pregnant girlfriend threatened to attempt suicide, and Chapman took a gun away from her, which is when the assault occurred. The woman was also charged with simple assault, said WRAL. No one reported injuries stemming from the incident.

“We’ve been made aware of a situation involving one of our student-athletes and we’re working to gather more information,” a UNC football spokesperson told Chapelboro Thursday afternoon.

According to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, Chapman was released from his 48-hour domestic violence hold on a written promise to appear in Chatham County District Court on October 19.

Chapman, originally from San Diego, California, has been part of the UNC football team since 2019. He appeared in 34 games and made 15 starts across four seasons with the Tar Heels and has four career interceptions and a forced fumble. In UNC’s season-opening win against Florida A&M last month, Chapman was credited with three total tackles.
