The Diamond Heels’ midseason swoon hit a low point in Charlotte Wednesday evening, as UNC fell to South Carolina in blowout fashion, 15-2.

The 15 runs and 14 hits allowed by the Tar Heels were both season-highs. Carolina’s struggles began early, as UNC fell behind 1-0 after the first inning, 3-0 after the second and 6-0 after the third. By the time the Tar Heels finally got on the board, the the game was practically on ice, as the UNC trailed 8-0. South Carolina added seven runs in the top of the ninth inning to put the capper on the forgettable night.

Gage Gillian got his first start of the season on the mound for Carolina, but only lasted 1+ inning while giving up the first two of South Carolina’s 15 runs. Nine pitchers in all would take the mound for the Tar Heels, and six of them gave up at least one run.

On the offensive side, the only bright spots were Danny Serretti and Johnny Castagnozzi, who each finished the night 2-4 with a run batted in. The rest of the Carolina hitters were just 3-27.

The loss is Carolina’s sixth in its last eight games, dropping its record to 20-9 after an 18-3 start. The road doesn’t get any easier for the Tar Heels, as a visit to Louisville awaits this weekend. The Cardinals are 21-7 overall and 7-2 in conference play. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
