The installation is a co-presentation of UNC’s Arts Everywhere and the Click! Photography Festival, and is the inaugural program in a larger initiative to support military communities through the arts.
Garmsir Marines depicts ten marines from the 1st Battalion, 6th Marines at a small combat outpost in the Garmsir District in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
Palu explained at the unveiling of the exhibition the value of seeing the human face of war.
“I did five years in Afghanistan and its incredible the things that you can learn from the military,” said Palu. “That whole idea of division and conflict that’s happening in this country right now; we can learn from the military because when you’re in a tough situation, that can’t happen.”
