Today is Wednesday, November 25, 2015.  Tomorrow is Thanksgiving.  We take a look back at one of the most famous Thanksgiving scenes in television history.  When the folks at WKRP learned that turkeys cannot fly.  We also hear about how a tweet got a cheerleader in trouble and see some cute bunnies.

As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly

“WKRP in Cincinnati” aired for four seasons on CBS.  Despite its relatively short run, the show has remained popular thanks to a success syndication run.

Some of the stories and characters were based on real events and people.  The show’s creator, Hugh Wilson, drew from his own experiences at Atlanta radio station WQXI.

WKRP’s most famous episode is “Turkey’s Away.”  It is based on a real story.  Radio executive Clark Browne explains, “The turkey drop was actually a real incident. It was at a shopping center in Atlanta; I think it was Broadview Plaza, which no longer exists. It was a Thankgiving promotion. We thought that we could throw these live turkeys out into the crowd for their Thanksgiving dinners. All of us, naïve and uneducated, thought that turkeys could fly.”

Cheerleader Tweets

The captain of a high school cheerleading team was disciplined after she sent out a tweet about undocumented immigrants.

The tweet read, “When only 10 percent of Revere votes for mayor, [it’s] ’cause the other 90 percent isn’t legal.”

It was a response to a tweet from Caley Godino’s teacher about the low voter turnout in November’s mayoral race.  She says she meant her tweet as a political comment, not a racial one.

But after other students complained, the school stepped in. Revere Superintendent Dianne Kelly says the district believes in freedom of speech, but cannot support what she calls “insensitive language.” “If you’re going to stand up and say something that other people will find offensive, then you need to be prepared to deal with the ramifications,” Kelly said.

Godino’s mother says her daughter is now banned from cheering for the rest of the season, and she doesn’t think the punishment fits the crime.
