UNC Student, Longtime BOG Chair’s Son Found Dead

CHAPEL HILL-A UNC junior and the son of a longtime chair of the System’s Board of Governors was found dead early Saturday morning.

Twenty-two-year-old Stedman Gage of Wilmington was the son of Hannah Gage, who served as the UNC Board of Governors’ Chair until last year. The body was found around 1:30 a.m. at an off-campus location.

Police are investigating the death and a medical examiner is set to perform an autopsy, but authorities are reportedly not treating the death as suspicious. Gage was a member of UNC’s Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Chancellor Holden Thorp issued the following statement:

I am saddened to inform you that one of our students has died. The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating the death of Stedman English Gage, a junior from Wilmington. Police said his body was discovered late Friday night at his off-campus residence. The cause of death has not been determined, but Chapel Hill Police do not suspect any foul play.

I have offered my support to Stedman’s parents in this time of grief. Please keep Stedman’s family and friends in your thoughts as we mourn this latest loss.

Counseling resources have been made available over the weekend to the students most immediately affected by the death.  Students who feel they need assistance may call Counseling and Wellness Services at (919) 966-2281 during regular operating hours. Employees may contact the Employee Assistance Program at (877) 314-5841.

Meanwhile, UNC’s Interfraternity Council issued the following statement:

“The (Interfraternity Council) is certainly shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of not only a UNC student but a member of the Greek community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gage family and the brothers of Phi Delta Theta.”
