Eastbound I-40 was closed at US-501 (MM 270) in Chapel Hill on Friday afternoon. The closure was due to a serious accident.
The left two lanes were soon opened and traffic was able to get by while work continued in the right lane and the right shoulder.
Authorities said to expect delays until 6:30 on Friday evening.
An alternative route: Motorists coming from I-85 North/I-40 East should stay on I-85 North, then take the NC-147 (Durham Freeway) exit to NC-147 South. NC-147 South will re-access I-40 East.
Traffic was at a standstill going both directions near US 15-501 on I-40. Eastbound traffic was backed up to New Hope Church Road (MM 263), seven miles from the accident.
